Around the world, March 8 is celebrated annually as International Women’s Day. The day focuses on the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and aims to raise awareness of women’s rights, equality, and gender discrimination.
History and Importance of March 8
March 8 International Women’s Day was born out of the struggles for women’s rights and workers’ rights in the early 1900s. In 1857, women textile workers in New York went on strike, demanding better working conditions, better wages, and shorter working days, which were dispersed by the police. However, these actions marked a turning point in women’s defense of their rights.
In 1910, at the 2nd International Conference of Socialist Women, Clara Zetkin, a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, proposed that March 8 be recognized as International Women’s Day and this proposal was unanimously accepted.

Today, International Women’s Day is used as a platform to celebrate women’s struggles for political participation, economic achievements, educational opportunities, and gender equality.
Issues Needing Awareness Raising
1-Women’s Rights and Equality
Women still face violations of equality and rights in many areas. Awareness should be raised on issues such as gender discrimination and the barriers women face in accessing leadership roles and working life.
2-Gender Roles and Stereotypes
Gender roles and stereotypes can limit the potential of women and girls. Education and awareness-raising are important in this regard.
3-Violence against Women
