What Does Easter Mean?

Easter, which is derived from the Hebrew word “Passover” with the transition to Aramaic, means “to pass without touching”. There are also opinions that it refers to the escape of the Israelites from their captivity in Egypt. The word used today as Easter in English is derived from the Germanic Calendar word Eostur, that is, April. This word takes its name from the goddess Eostre, who represents the rebirth and rising sun in the Pagans.
Easter, which is known by different names and meanings in every society, has entered the Turkish language by deriving from the Greek word Pashalia.

What is Easter?

Easter, known as the oldest holiday of Christians, is the day when Jesus Christ was resurrected after his death according to their religious beliefs. Every year, between March 22 and April 25, it is celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon period of the month. Although it is celebrated on different dates for each church, Easter, which symbolizes the resurrection on the 3rd day after the crucifixion of Jesus, is defined as a holiday celebrated on the Sunday after a 5-week “Great Lent” period and the last week of “Holy Week”.

Although the period of the Great Fasting differs according to the churches, the main purpose is to prepare oneself for Easter by fasting and to return to the path of Jesus by being freed from worldly needs. In ‘Holy Week’, Thursday is referred to as the day of “Holy Mourning” due to Jesus’ crucifixion after his last supper, while Sunday is referred to as the day of the “Holy Resurrection”. Different names such as “Feast of Judgment, Resurrection Day and Resurrection Market” are also used for this day.

When is Easter celebrated?

There are different dates used by Eastern and Western churches for Easter, which does not have an exact day. Since Christians in Anatolia accept the 14th day after the first full moon of spring as the day of Jesus’ crucifixion, they accept 3 days after that as Easter .In Western churches, it is considered the first Sunday after the day Jesus was crucified. Easter, which is celebrated from late March to late April, is generally celebrated on the Sunday after the first full moon from March 21, the spring equinox.

What Are the Easter Traditions?

Easter is celebrated with different services in each church and also in homes with various dishes. Candles are lit, prayers are offered and meals are eaten. In addition to Easter buns, Easter chocolates and cakes of various shapes made for this day, perhaps the most important symbol of Easter is the eggs painted in color.

Easter is a public holiday for Christians. Shops and shops are closed during this holiday. Mass is held in churches, large breakfast tables are prepared in homes. Eggs and chocolates specially prepared for this day are hidden by families in various parts of the house and children try to find these hidden Easter symbols. In summary, if you see a child looking for something in his garden on Easter day, know that he is after these cheerful eggs!

What do Easter Eggs Mean?

The egg has been seen since ancient times as the beginning of life and a symbol of rebirth. Since Easter is also celebrated as the resurrection of Jesus, the egg is one of the most important symbols of this holiday. There is, of course, also a reason why boiled eggs are painted in various colors! While the cheerful colors used in the painting reflect the joy caused by Jesus’ resurrection, the red color used in almost every painting is a reference to Jesus’ blood spilled on the cross. The hard shell of the egg is the symbol of Jesus’ sealed tomb, while the cracking of the eggshell symbolizes the rebirth of Jesus.
We have already mentioned that the eggs, which have been identified with Easter since the Middle Ages, symbolize the resurrection for Easter. The celebratory eggs are first boiled, colored with the emotions of the painter, and then hidden in the corners of the house or garden. The part after the egg is stored concerns the children. Because it’s their job to find the hidden egg, and in return, small gifts and the chocolate bunny are waiting for them.Rabbit figures, one of the other symbols of Easter, are also related to birth. Known for its fast breeding habits, the rabbit represents birth and life on Easter.
With the beginning of the preparations for the Easter Holiday, a drop of gum and the smell of mahlep spreads to the streets from the windows of those who celebrate the holiday. Easter buns, which are neither sweet nor salty to taste, are as sacred to the Christian tradition as they are delicious.
The production of Easter bun, which expresses unity and solidarity with its intertwined braids, is a bit troublesome. Even many years ago, when everything was made according to tradition, men helped to make the doughnut, and they had a finger in the dough that was kneaded for a long time. It is not known whether everything that is made together and shared has a different taste, it is said that the buns were more delicious at that time.
